The United States viewed the Hiroshima operation as a largescale scientific experiment that would force Japan to capitulate and avoid a Russian invasion of Japan. As the first mass bombing in history, Japan sustained upwards of 70,000 fatal injuries due to the atom bomb's destructive force on Hiroshima.
